In Pictures: Heath Park Tramway, Cardiff

You probably need to read the title of this article very carefully as it does say Heath not Heaton and its in Cardiff not Manchester! The Heath Park Tramway is a miniature tramway which runs in the park which is slightly to the north of the NHS University Hospital of Wales (Heath Hospital) and is one of several lines (the others being railways which run in the park), all operated by the Cardiff Model Engineering Society.

The tramway was originally located at a site in Whitchurch Road, Cardiff but made the move to Heath Park in 1987 which is where they have been ever since. It usually opens once a month to the public (although private visits are made by schools and children’s charities amongst others) between March and October each year.

Every tramway needs a depot and workshop and this is the structure that performs that role at the Heath Park Tramway.

One of the trams which runs on the line is no. 2 seen here. This is a 14 seat bogie car built in 1975.

Four years older than 2, is 1. Built in 1971 this car seats just 6 people and is a 2 axle vehicle.

Here we see 1 in the depot/workshop. (All Photographs by Bob Hodges, 14th April 2023)
