£2 million invested in Metro lift and escalator works

Nexus are investing £2 million in a major programme of lift and escalator works at various stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro network. The work is already underway and should be completed by the end of the summer.

Work is being undertaken on all three escalators at Haymarket whilst ten lifts (at Chichester, Gateshead, Benton, Central, Haymarket) are being refitted and the lift at Monument is being completely replaced. The lifts will all receive LED lighting and digital help points. The work should see the facilities good for another 15 years of use.

Sarah McManus, Nexus’ Head of Renewals, said: “We are investing £2m in lifts and escalators on the Metro system to ensure they are fit for service for many more years to come. These assets are heavily used by customers, especially at those stations in busy city centres. They need renewal work. At Haymarket all three of the station’s escalators are being refitted with the steps and drive chains. We are grateful to customers for their patience while these works are taking place. These projects are just a part of the major multi-million-pound investments that we have made to renew key parts of Metro’s infrastructure over the last ten years.”
