Around the World in Trams: Christchurch 178

Its another couple of photos from the Ferrymead Tramway in Christchurch for this weeks edition of “Around the World in Trams”.

Its another Christchurch tram which we feature in the below photos, this time its 178 which was built in 1921. Constructed by Boon & Co Ltd in the city it’s known as a Brill or an One Man Car and remained in service until withdrawal in 1953. It was then acquired by the Tramway Historical Society in 1967 and became the first electric tram which the society restored.

In both of these photos 178 is in the late 1930s livery style. Since these images were captured it has been repainted into a red livery. This first photo shows it at The Square on 24th September 1996.

And then four days later we see 178 as it enters Cathedral Square with a trailer in tow.

Both Photographs by Mervyn Williams
