Picture in Time: Tyne and Wear Metro 4027

Today we take another trip into the archives for this edition of “Picture in Time” with another view of one of the Tyne and Wear Metro’s Metrocars in service.

After last week’s pre-system opening images of a vehicle on test we move forward in time to 27th June 1989 and find ourselves at Ilford Road. This station was newly built for the Tyne and Wear Metro and welcomed its first trains on 11th August 1980 as part of the opening of the first phase of the system. Its located between West Jesmond and South Gosforth and is served by trains on both of the routes which make up the network today.

In the below photo 4027 (and an unidentified second unit) is in the original Cadmium Yellow and White livery as it calls with a service from St James to South Shields. 4027 is now in the black and yellow fleet livery and remains operational.
