Vehicles identified as being for Cairo seen at Southampton

When departing on a cruise from Southampton recently some unidentified rail vehicles were spotted on the quayside. Can you help Mike Norris with identifying where they were heading or any other information about them? There are no discernible markings on them to help with an identification (although that isn’t graffiti it is part of the livery!) but they were sitting on container flats of an Atlantic car carrying line which may give some clue.

Thanks to everyone who has either emailed or commented below. We think that the vehicles may be for Cairo based on all the comments!

They are mono rail vehicles being constructed by Alstom at Derby works for a line in Saudi Arabia. There was an article in a railway magazine about them recently but I think I have recycled my copy!

Not sure if this is of use https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/19483784.amp/. Southampton may be considered trams

  4. Steve Hyde says:

I believe they are vehicles for Cairo monorail and have been built at the Derby works of Alston. They are part of a contract won by Bombardier in 2019 according to this article. https://www.mtdmfg.com/news/derbys-bombardier-signs-multi-billion-dollar-egyptian-monorail-contract/. It sounds like a fairly substantial deal.

  5. Paul D says:

Thery are trains for the monorail system under construction in Cairo, Egypt; built by Alstom in Derby.

I shall never understand some countries. Cairo’s trams limped around for decades without any money being spent on them until they finally died in 2019 and now they can afford billions on a monorail?
