New fare cap for Pop Pay As You Go users on Tyne and Wear Metro

Passengers travelling on the Tyne and Wear Metro who use Pop Pay As You Go are to be the latest public transport users to enjoy a lower than usual fare cap at the start of 2023 with a new limit announced by Nexus. The decision was confirmed by the North East Joint Transport Committee at a meeting on 15th November and will see all single journeys capped at £2 and all day travel at £4. The cap will be in place between Monday 2nd January and Friday 31st March 2023.

The fare caps will be available for those who travel with a Pop Pay As You Go card or an Android smartphone with the Google Pay app installed. It matches an equivalent offer on the local bus network, which is being introduced for the same period with government funding in place.

Huw Lewis, Customer Services Director at Nexus, said: “By making the switch to Pop Pay As You Go our customers can make even bigger savings on the cost of Metro travel in 2023, when we are going to introduce a new fare cap to help people with the cost of living.  The Pop card or the Google Pay app are by far the most cost-effective way to pay for travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro. From January 2 all single journeys on pay as you go will be capped £2, and all day travel will be capped at £4. All you need to do is download the Google Pay app or apply for a Pop card to enjoy the benefits of the fare cap. We really do recommend that customers make the switch. Currently only one in five people are travelling with a Pop card, so are missing out on the savings which are on offer during these hard-pressed times.”

The £2 fare cap will give an adult savings of up to 38% off a single journey whilst the daily cap on all zone travel will come down from £4.85 – a saving of 85p.
