Updated! Crich Tram Day programme of events amended

Please note the plan of events for Tram Day has been changed since this article was published. London Transport 1622 will now not run and the day starts with a cavalcade of trams in service when Queen Elizabeth II was born. For full details of the new programme of events visit https://www.tramway.co.uk/whatson/tram-day-3/ which contains a link to the programme. Apologies for not updating this article as it’s difficult to do it on my phone! The below article is the original published in early September.

With significant closure anniversaries in London and Glasgow being reached this year it will probably come as no surprise that the two tramways will feature heavily in Tram Day – due to take place at the Crich Tramway Village on Saturday 17th September 2022. The one day event is the main enthusiast orientated event of the year and should see the usual mix of photo line-ups, works cars in operation and an intensive tram service running.

2022 is the 70th anniversary since the last trams ran in London and also marks 60 years since the closure of the Glasgow tram system and these two systems will be featuring as part of the two main depot fan photo line-ups during the day. At 1100 it will be the Glasgow 60th Anniversary since closure line-up with the London Trams line-up set to be at 1500.

Meanwhile, recently returned to service London pair, London United Tramways 159 and London Transport 1622 will be displayed on the street for photos before the service begins whist those two will start the tram service at 1130. Trams will run throughout the day until 1700 when it the last trams will have a Glasgow theme featuring Glasgow 22 and Liverpool 869 (ex-Glasgow 1055).

As in recent years it is planned that all available trams will run in service with some being designated all day cars, others morning only and others afternoon only – but there should still be a healthy mix of variety on offer throughout the day, including Blackpool & Fleetwood 40 as an all day car along with London United Tramways 159, London Passenger Transport Board 1622 and Glasgow 22.

Details of the event are still provisional and may be subject to change, depending on weather, tram availability and staff availability but the current plan is as follows:

0945-1015: Curtain Raiser – Chance for photos of London United Tramways 159 and London Passenger Transport Board 1622 in the street

1000-1030: Photographic opportunities on the Depot Fan as cars enter service

1030-1130: Shunting on the Depot Fan, including the opportunity to see trams on the Traverser

1130-1200: 70th Anniversary of London Closure – tram service commences with LUT 159 and LPTB 1622

1030-1200: Intensive tram service in operation including Works Cars

1100-1130: Glasgow 60th Anniversary since Closure line-up on Depot Fan

1200-1400: Trams return to depot for lunch with photo opportunities on the depot fan

1300-1500: Belper Town Band playing on the Bandstand

1400-1700: Intensive tram service in operation including Works Cars

1500-1600: London Trams line-up on Depot Fan

1630: Shunting on depot fan as trams return to depot

1700: Last Tram – 60th Anniversary of Glasgow Closure to be operated by Glasgow 22 and Liverpool 869

There will also be a book sale in the Learning Centre
