Another three month closure for the Eccles line

Those who rely on Manchester Metrolink’s Eccles line are set to be hit by another three month closure later this year with Transport for Greater Manchester confirming the third phase of rail replacement works this year. Trams will not run between MediaCityUK and Eccles from Saturday 16th July and Friday 21st October.

The work due to take place this time will see the replacement of worn rails in a number of locations and is essential maintenance as part of Metrolink’s planned track renewal programme.

The final trams to Eccles will run on Friday 15th July with the full line due to reopen on Saturday 22nd October.

During the closure there will be the usual bus replacement services from MediaCityUK to Eccles serving the stops at Broadway, Langworthy, Weaste and Ladywell. Trams will continue to run from MediaCityUK into Manchester City Centre and on to Ashton-under-Lyne.

To be blunt, for most of its length, the Eccles line track should have been replaced years ago. To here the noise produced from inward bound cars between Weaste and Langworthy is a disgrace on a modern tramway and is just as much pollution as air quality.
