Edinburgh Trams starts major recruitment drive

Edinburgh Trams are looking for 20 new Ticketing Service Assistants as part of a new recruitment campaign which will also see tram drivers and engineers recruited as the tramway recovers from the pandemic and ahead of the expansion of the route to Newhaven.

The Ticketing Service Assistant role – Ticket Inspectors to you or me! – is responsible for delivering “Excellence for Edinburgh” while protecting revenue and ensuring passengers on the trams receive the best travelling experience.

Sue Butcher, Edinburgh Trams HR Manager, said: “We have many benefits of working as a Ticketing Service Assistant including a competitive salary, 33 days annual leave, Bank Holiday overtime rates, a Contributory Company Pension Scheme, Life Cover, HSF Health Plan and a Cycle to Work Scheme. Our most popular benefits are a free ridacard for the employee plus a discounted ridacard for someone else in the employee’s household.”

The recruitment process consists of completing an online application form followed by an Assessment Day at Gogar Tram Depot. Those who pass a Ticketing Check Test, and a group exercise, are then invited to a competency-based interview. Successful candidates receive in-depth training to learn how to see every interaction as an opportunity to engage passengers in new and exciting ways.

Robbie Newton, Ticketing Service Assistant, joined Edinburgh Trams in 2018: “Being autistic, working with the public was a challenge to begin with; however, in my journey with the company, I have gained some good social skills; the ability to help passengers and the ability to empathise.”

Ticketing Service Assistants have the opportunity to progress to Tram Drivers, which can then lead to  Control Room and Duty Manager roles. There are also opportunities for internal moves into office support and engineering roles.
