More engineering work coming on the West Midlands Metro

As we wait for news of a reopening date for services through Birmingham City Centre after the three month closure to allow the Eastside extension junction to be installed and track to be relaid on Bull Street and Corporation Street, it has now been announced that there will be further engineering works taking place this November – at Jewellery Quarter and between Bilston Central and The Crescent.

Jewellery Quarter works

The overhead line equipment is due to be upgraded in this area (hopefully helping to solve the regular overhead problems experienced on the network) with the work taking place overnight throughout November

From Monday 1st November until Thursday 2nd December there will be changes to the service Mondays to Thursdays only:

  • From 2200 trams will operate Wolverhampton St George’s to Handsworth Booth Street only
  • Metro tickets will be accepted on National Express bus service 74 between West Bromwich and Birmingham and West Midlands Railways services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham. A dedicated bus replacement service will also operate serving all stops in the closed section.

Bilston Central to The Crescent

Track is due to be replaced in this section from the end of October. The majority of work will take place outside of service hours but there will be some line closures.

The following changes will be in place on Saturday 13th/Sunday 14th and Saturday 20th/Sunday 21st October:

  • No trams between Wednesbury Parkway and Wolverhampton St George’s
  • Metro tickets will be accepted on National Express bus service 79 between Wolverhampton and Wednesbury and West Midlands Railways services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham. A dedicated bus replacement service will also operate serving all stops in the closed section.
