Appeal launched to restore Laxey Goods Shed

Volunteers from the Manx Electric Railway and Great Laxey Mine Railway have launched an appeal to help restore the historic Manx Electric Railway Laxey Goods Shed – which has been the base of the volunteers for a number of high quality restorations of MER rolling stock in recent years.

The Goods Shed – built in 1903 – is the last surviving original Goods Shed on the MER and although no longer connected to the MER line, is located adjacent to the tracks in the Laxey Station area and is used as a base for the group of volunteers to restore various items of MER rolling stock.

The building does remain in relatively good condition but some remedial work needs to be carried out to enable it to remain suitable as a workshop and base for the group. Funds have already been raised to replace the main windows of the Goods Shed and are now seeking donations and sponsorship to carry out further repairs which will include two new doors, fascia boards, gutters and downspurts, new internal wiring and a repaint of the exterior. £20,000 is needed to cover the cost of all this work.

The group of volunteers – who are part of the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust – have restored MER Wagon 8 and Mail Van 16 and were also involved in the restoration of Ratchet Car 14, have repainted Trailer 51 and are working on the restoration of trailer 19. To be able to continue on these high-quality restorations they need your help to raise these funds!

To donate you can either send donations by cheque to their registered office at The Great Laxey Mine Railway, The Gift Shop and Information Centre, Mines Road, Laxey, IM4 7NH or by direct transfer to Isle of Man Bank Eastern Region, Sort Code: 55 91 00, account no.: 57148198.

All donations will be acknowledged in their regular newsletter, on their Facebook page and on a permanent plaque mounted on the shed once the work is completed (unless you wish to remain anonymous).
