Trams &: Chesterfield 7 & car & bus

We’re getting more than our monies worth for today’s “Trams &” as we see a tram along with not just one but two other vehicles!

The date of this image is 17th May 2014 which was part of the Best of Sheffield event celebrating the return to service of Sheffield 510. And if that wasn’t enough this day also saw the Wirksworth Assessment Trial visit which meant there were plenty of opportunities for images such as the below to be captured. While it may have been a Sheffield based event it wasn’t just Sheffield trams in service as can be seen from Chesterfield 7 providing the trams bit of this image outside The Red Lion.

As 7 heads to terminate at Stephenson Place it passes two vehicles with a Sheffield connection. In front is a car which was built by Sheffield-Simplex and was visiting the event from the Kelham Island Museum in the city. Just behind the car is a bus which is part of the South Yorkshire Transport Museum collection, Leyland PD3 904.

The Sheffield Bus Museum is now called the South Yorkshire Transport Museum and is based at Aldwarke in Rotherham.

Just to add to the car information. As you described PE 1717 is a Sheffield built ‘Sheffield-Simplex’ owned by the Kelham Island Museum. It was built in 1920 and has a 7000cc, 50hp, petrol engine; a mighty beast! It is believed to be the last car built by the company.

A bit more “Sheffield” is in the picture, Chesterfield 7 rides on the truck of former Sheffield tram 349
