Picture in Time: Blackpool Twin Car 686+676 & Balloon 717

Once more we head to August for an image from Blackpool as “Picture in Time” continues.

This photo is again a “I’d forgotten that layout existed” moment as we see the former northbound unloading stop on the mainline between the two ends of the loop just on the left hand side of the image. But that isn’t our main focus of attention as there are two trams in view. Led by Twin Car 686+676 (running trailer first) and seemingly on route 11 terminating at Pleasure Beach we also see Balloon Car 717 (which is also terminating at Pleasure Beach). Green and cream dominates with both trams in the then current fleet livery as well as the Blackpool Transport waves and Tower logo. The Twin Car can also bee seen to have the early 1990s safety posters affixed alongside the doors. Fortunes for these two trams have been different since with the Twin Car withdrawn in 2004 and stored at the depot whilst 717 was restored to near original condition and continues to be part of the operational heritage fleet.

The date here is 16th August 1993.
