Lift replacement to start at The Hawthorns

The lifts at The Hawthorns Railway Station are to be replaced in a three month project which will see both railway station and tram stop having no step free access between 1st December 2020 and 15th March 2021. The lifts haven’t been replaced since the opening of the station in 1995 and now is the time for this to happen to improve their reliability to all public transport users.

The Hawthorns tramstop is in a cutting with access either via stairs to the Birmingham bound platform or via the railway station which provides the only access via lift for those who may not be able to use the stairs. The closure of the lifts for their replacement will mean this will not be an option and presumably anyone wishing to take the tram will now need to use another stop during this work.

Carl Williams, West Midlands Metro Director of Operations, said: “When complete, these upgrades to the lifts will improve reliability and provide easier access for many of our customers. We should like to thank them in advance for their patience while this essential work is carried out.”
