Around the World in Trams: Vienna 4010

We’re back a bit closer to home for the next few weeks as we head to the Austrian capital – Vienna.

The tram network in Vienna today is the fifth largest in the world with 109.9 mile route length (176.9km) and a huge 1,071 stations. The first trams ran in 1865 and although there have been route closures after the peak was reached between the two wars it still remains an extensive standard gauge tramway.

Taken on 19th May 2012 this first view shows 4010 at the lower level at Schottentor. This is the terminus of routes 37/38/40/41/42 and provides an interchange with the Vienna U-Bahn line U2. This tram is a type E1 which was built from 1966 – a single articulated, high floor car built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker under licence from Duewag.
