Picture in Time: Leeds 602

Back to Crich for this edition of “Picture in Time” and having been in the 1960s for the last couple of weeks we now move forward to the 1970s. And the tram we feature is one which we have seen many times in this series in the past – Leeds 602.

Leeds 602 was captured on colour film in this view with the image dated as 1974, although this was a year that the unique Leeds car was not serviceable at Crich, which may explain the lack of passengers on board. 602 is a tram which has been rarely out of the news in recent years following the decision to conserve rather than restore but in the 1970s it was a different time and 602 had already seen limited operation before it would see some workshop attention and then a return to action in 1975. Over the years use of 602 has been a little sporadic with the most prolonged spell between 1987 and 1995. Its last use was in 2006 when it was withdrawn for the final time and it can now be found on display in the Great Exhibition Hall.
