In Pictures: Tyne and Wear Metro Maintenance and Renewable Skills Centre under construction

When the old South Shields Metro station was closed it was announced that the site would be used as the centrepiece of a new Maintenance and Renewable Skills Centre. With a budget of £8.4 million the new centre will be a bespoke training facility for Nexus to deliver a wide range of infrastructure and operations training to staff.

Work on constructing this new centre has been ongoing since last summer when the old South Shields station closed to be replaced by a new transport interchange just short of the old station. The platform remains in situ but the old station building has been demolished. The actual Skills Centre is being built on the site of the original BR station.

Looking from the new station to the old with the platform still in place. Also note the sleeper on the track to help prevent trains from going too far.

The old east entrance is still standing as seen here.

The new skills centre building is starting to progress with overhead gantries also in place. (All Photographs by Trevor Hall, 8th February 2020)
