Tyne & Wear Metro wins at UK Rail Business Awards

For long suffering passengers who are delayed regularly it may seem a surprise but the Tyne and Wear Metro is celebrating after winning at the Rail Business Awards for helping to transport people for a packed programme of events in summer 2018.

The award was given in the Accessibility and Integrated Transport Excellence category and was for delivering an unprecedented level of additional Metro services testing Metro’s resources to the limit. There was an enhanced programme of exhibitions, stadium concerts and open-air family events drawing visitors from across the country saw an extra half a million passengers carried.

As well as this award win, Nexus was Highly Commended for Marketing and Communications Excellence for a successful campaign to win Government funding for a new, and much needed, fleet of trains.

Tobyn Hughes, Managing Director of Nexus, said: ““This highly prestigious national award is deserved recognition for the unprecedented levels of extra Metro services that we delivered last summer. We were up against some of the very best firms in the railway industry and we have ended up winning. It’s a huge honour and it’s testament to the hard work of our staff over many months. It was our busiest ever summer in 2018, as North East England played host to a raft of high profile events that attracted thousands of people, many from outside our region. The Tyne and Wear Metro had a vital role to play and we carried an extra 500,000 passengers.”

By the end of summer 2018 more than 200 additional services had been operated on the Metro with traincrew having to work 1,226 extra hours and customer service and temporary staff worked 4,336 additional hours.
