St Peter’s Square sees another slow speed collision

Two trams have had a low speed collision at St Peter’s Square, with the incident coming six weeks to the day since a similar incident at the same location albeit on a different platform. The two trams came together on the 2CC platform heading out of the city with 3094 and 3113 the trams involved.

Once again it is not immediately apparent as to why the second tram has run into the back of the first but it should be noted that it is currently normal operating practice that a second tram can enter a platform whilst the first is still present. The two trams had to remain in position whilst the RAIB were informed and presumably a full investigation will be undertaken, especially considering this is such a similar incident to that which had happened on Friday 10th November.

The facts, as known, of this collision are that it had happened on the 2CC outbound line heading towards East Didsbury with 3094 running into the back of 3113 at approximately 1330. Initially all services between East Didsbury and Shaw & Crompton/Rochdale Town Centre were diverted via Market Street but then 2CC was served by services towards Rochdale with East Didsbury bound services still diverted via Market Street. This diversion stayed in place until approximately 1600.

Danny Vaughan, TfGM Head of Metrolink, was quoted in the Manchester Evening News as saying: “We have been made aware of a low speed collision between two trams at St Peter’s Square. No injuries have been reported. I am extremely disappointed as this is the second incident of this nature in the last few weeks. KeolisAmey Metrolink, which operates the network, has notified the relevant authorities of the incident and we will work to restore normal services as soon as possible. I want to re-iterate this is a very minor incident with relatively small impact to services and we do apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
