Chesterfield 7 rides again

Following some remedial attention to its paintwork, Chesterfield 7 made a belated year debut in passenger service at Crich Tramway Village on 17th August. This was the tram’s first outing since having its First World War recruitment posters and decorations removed, which were carried for much of the 2015 operating season.

Removal of some of these posters caused some damage to the exterior paintwork which required some touching-up, including repainting of the maroon dash panels. With the full repaint of Blackpool 40 recently completed, attention was then turned to 7 which was swiftly returned to an immculate appearance. This means that Crich now have two open balcony cars in the operational fleet again, having been unusually devoid of this popular type of tram for the early part of 2016.

Another tram could soon be set for a return to service after being absent since last autumn – Blackpool Brush Railcoach 630 has spent some time in the workshop recently for attention to its air brakes which are defective. Hopefully curing this fault will not be too big a job and 630 will be able to run again for the final weeks of the open season this year, when its saloon heaters are likely to be appreciated by passengers and crews alike.

One does wonder why work wasn’t paused on 40 to get 7 back in traffic earlier in the season, given that work on 7 has taken just a couple of weeks to complete.
