Picture in Time: South Yorkshire Supertram 05

Its time for another trip to the second of the UK’s new on street tramways for this installment of “Picture in Time” as we take a look at South Yorkshire Supertram 05 in April 1994.

The South Yorkshire Supertram system opened in several stages between 1994 and 1995 with the first section being that between Fitzalan Square and Meadowhall on what is now the Yellow route. This welcomed its first passengers on 21st March 1994 and our photo today is taken just a few weeks later and shows tram 05 running over the stunning Park Square Bridge. It is only a few weeks into the system but the tram does seem rather devoid of passengers. 05 is one of 25 trams built by Deuwag in Germany in the early 1990s and for 20 years they were the biggest trams to have ever operated in the UK. This accolade ended when Edinburgh Trams introduced their CAF built trams upon opening in 2014.
