In Pictures: Another different tram in service at Beamish

So far in 2022 as our “Beamish correspondent” has paid a visit to the museum there has been a different tram in use and that continued on Sunday 16th January when fully enclosed Sunderland 16 was allocated to service. This follows on from Blackpool 31 at the turn of the year and Sheffield 264 the previous Sunday in running in service at the museum. This pictorial article takes a look at not only 16 in service but also some of the sights around the depot. Trevor Hall is our photographer.

More utility diversion works on Birmingham Eastside extension

We saw a few days ago recent progress on the construction works for the Birmingham Eastside extension on the West Midlands Metro and it has now been confirmed that further utility diversion works are now underway on Meriden Street. These works join those taking place on Lower Bull Street and Digbeth High Street.

Rugby fans urged to pre-purchase tram tickets for Six Nations

With Rugby’s Six Nations championship set to get underway in February, fans heading to the home of Scottish Rugby at BT Murrayfield Stadium are being urged to book their tram tickets in advance to save having to queue on the day. Scotland will play England for the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield on Saturday 5th February with trams set to run up to every three minutes before and after the match will be played with a capacity crowd following recent changes in Scottish Government restrictions on outdoor events.

In Pictures: Signs of the new fares in Blackpool

Earlier this month we brought you the news that fares across the Blackpool Transport network would be increasing as from Sunday 16th January and now as part of the publicity campaign to let would be passengers know small signs have been added to the cabs of the Flexity2 trams operating the core service. Two are applied to the tram – one on each side.

Later last trams for NET as Sunday timetable continues

With continued staff shortages on Nottingham Express Transit the tram network continues to be running to Sunday frequencies until further notice. But as from Monday 17th January the hours of service Monday to Saturday have been extended with later last trams now due to run.

Nottinghamshire County Council to consult on free concessionary travel scheme on NET

Ever since the Labour government of the time announced a free bus concessionary travel scheme across England in the early 21st century there has been one major flaw in that it did exactly as it said on the tin – with central government funding to reimburse bus operators only with tram and light rail not included. This has led to an inconsistent application across the country – the situation in Blackpool in particular has been well reported over the years – with it down to local authorities having to provide funding out of their own budgets. And now with Council budgets being tightened Nottinghamshire County Council are proposing removing funding for free tram travel on Nottingham Express Transit.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition returns to the Seaton Tramway

Starting on 11th February, the Seaton Tramway will be host again of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition, on loan from the Natural History Museum, for two months with the chance to see some stunning images taken of wildlife across the world. Costing £5 entrance fee (for adults, children are free), the exhibition will be located at the new Seaton terminus between 11th February and 8th April 2022.

It’s the news we’ve been waiting for. West Midlands Metro services will run between Bull Street and Library again by the end of January – which will be a full six months since passengers could last travel on that section. Or at least that’s the hope as it is still dependent on tram availability.

Tyne & Wear Metro fare changes on the way

The latest system to announce revised fares for 2022 is the Tyne and Wear Metro with Nexus confirming that the new fares will be in place from 1st April 2022. Whilst making a point that adult fares using Pop Pay As You Go will not be rising at this time there are, however, increases for standard season tickets and other fares purchased from ticket machines as the Metro attempts to meet running costs as it faces ongoing financial challenges due to the Covid-19 impact.

In Pictures: 45 enters service on West Midlands Metro
