All change in Edinburgh as Labour and SNP coalition takes control of Council

Following the recent elections the City of Edinburgh Council will now be in the hands of
a Labour/Scottish Nationalist Party coalition with the Liberal Democrats the big losers. As a result in this shift of power all hopes of extending the “half a line” currently being constructed for eventual – and long awaited – opening in 2014 have been put on the backburner with the new Council leader, Cllr Andrew Burns from Labour, saying any further lines will not be looked at until 2017 at the earliest.

Speaking in the Edinburgh Evening News, Cllr Burns said: “Our focus is on finishing the tram project according to the plans agreed by the council last year. We are not closing our eyes to further development of the tram, but there will not be any further line extensions this side of 2017.”

Meanwhile the coalition have confirmed that they are willing to wait until the tram line is operational before an inquiry into the whole project takes place. The Labour Party has
previously said that they wanted an inquiry as soon as possible so that those people to blame could be held accountable but it appears that now they have got power they aren’t quite as eager to find out just what went wrong in returning trams to the streets of Edinburgh.
