Judicial review launched to reverse Lauderdale Avenue crossing closure

Just when you thought residents and Councillors near to the Lauderdale Avenue crossing in Cleveleys had accepted the inevitable regarding its closure comes the news that they are now seeking a Judicial Review on actions leading up to the closure. As has been reported in depth previously it was decided to close this crossing, along with a number of others on the stretch of the Blackpool Tramway between Little Bispham and Fleetwood, to help speed up the tram service and to reduce the potential for accidents.

However although the other closures seemed to go without a hitch this one has proved to be controversial from the outset and has become a bit of a political football over the past few years. The decision kept going back to the Council and the same result keep coming out and that was that there was no funding to allow it to remain open and that it should be closed. Matters came to a head earlier this year when the tarmac on the crossing was removed and the crossing was permanently removed with a new foot crossing installed near to the location to allow pedestrians continued access with motorists expected to use either of the other local road crossings.

Legal documents have now been presented to the High Court and claim that the best interests of the local community have not been taken into account in the decision. This action has been bought by a local resident with the full backing of the Ward’s two Councillors who have been very vocal in their condemnation of the decision to close the crossing.
