Picture in Time 13: Glasgow 1245

With Glasgow 1245 in the news recently following progress on its restoration at Summerlee our latest “Picture in Time” takes us back to a time shortly after the tram arrived at the East Anglia Transport Museum in Carlton Colville.

Glasgow 1245 had spent some time on display at the short-lived Midland Motor Museum at Measham in Leicestershire – an outpost of the National Motor Museum – alongside London trolleybus 1521 and a Leicester AEC Renown bus before in the late 1960s it made the trip to East Anglia alongside the other two vehicles.

After arriving at Carlton Colville some work was undertaken on 1245 and our first photos shows the tram shortly after removal of the trucks in order to facilitate the regauging of the wheelsets. Once the trucks were reassembled and the body re-instated works then progressed to get 1245 operational. It was not possible for the tram to operate with its bow collector and so an exchange was made with the Scottish Railway Preservation Society for trolley poles and bases. The trolley base and pole was installed on 1245 to allow testing of the electrical systems could commence and the car did operate – on test periodically – although there was no seating on the lower deck and the air pressure was provided by a trolleybus compressor.

Our second photo also includes 1245 in front of the depot alongside Blackpool Marton VAMBAC 11 and Lowestoft 14 with Blackpool Standard 159 seen in the distance in operation.

  1. Andrew Harper says:

The trolleypoles referred to came off the Fairfield electric loco in the SRPS collection. They were fitted when its operating line in Govan Road was converted to trolleybus operation in 1958. The loco now has an extended Fischer bow collector (as carried 1940-58) and is on display in the Scottish Railway Museum in Bo’ness.
