Tyne and Wear Metro sees the penultimate delivery of new trains

Friday 6th and Saturday 7th February 2026 saw the Tyne and Wear Metro welcome the penultimate delivery of new Stalder trains with 555 023, 555 026 and 555 045 delivered having made the journey across from Switzerland.

As we’ve seen in all deliveries, the units are transported by rail across from Stadler’s plants in Switzerland. Once arriving in the UK they have several different journeys – firstly from Dolland Moor to Wembley, then Wembley to York and finally from York up to Pelaw, which is the link between Network Rail and Metro lines. The final leg of the journey then sees the new units dragged to Gosforth Depot with one of the already delivered units doing the honours.

Because of the length of the units they are delivered to the Metro in two parts, this time saw 555 026 and 555 045 arrive first before 555 023 followed the next day.

This now means there have been 43 of the 46 delivered. Its expected the last three (555 022, 555 029 and 555 046) will follow later this month to bring an end to deliveries.

  • The past week has also seen another couple of scrap moves. 4014 and 4089 have been the latest to head off, 4014 on 4th February and then 4089 is confirmed as going on 5th February.
