Around the World in Trams: Istanbul 706

The next stop on our world tour will be the Turkish city of Istanbul as we take look at a set of photos taken during a visit in September 2025 as a stop-off on a cruise in the region.

The Istanbul tram system operates on the European side of the city. The first line (T1) opened in 1992 and that was followed in 2006 by T2, T4 came in 2007, T5 in 2021 and then T6 in 2024.  A previous tram system ran in Istanbul until 1966.

A mix of trams now operate on the network – Bombardier Flexity Swift, Alstom Citadis 304, ABB, Duewag KTA, Hyundai Rotem LRV34 and RTE.

In this image we see 706 and another similar car after departing from Sultanahmet Istasyonu platform and heading towards Cemberlitas on 13th September 2025.  This is a Bombardier Flexity Swift built in 2002, one of 55 built for Istanbul.
