MPB Structures start work on Black Country Line Phase 2

Another company has signed a contract to work alongside the Midlands Metro Alliance on the construction of phase two of the Black Country line extension. MPB Structures Limited have already commenced work on the extension, building on their previous work which included the delta junction linking the line with the original Birmingham to Wolverhampton line at Wednesbury.

The newly signed contract will involve more than 600m of infrastructure, to include:

  • Movement of more than 30,000 m3 of stone and excavated materials
  • Installation of 1260t of sheet piles and 8700m of bored piles
  • Placement 7000m3 of structural concrete
  • Erection of 622t of structural steelwork

This will include the construction of a 225m multi-span viaduct and a 100m bored pile reinforced concrete slab onto an existing railway embankment.

Sean Boyle, Board Director for MPB Structures Limited, said: “Starting Phase 2 of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension is a proud moment for everyone at MPB. It reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality, complex infrastructure that connects communities.”

The value of the contract is approximately £37 million.

Phase two of the line will continue from the first terminus at Flood Street in Dudley and go to Merry Hill Waterfront.
