More changes on the Tyne and Wear Metro

It seems that there aren’t many weeks which go by at the moment without there being some change to the fleet on the Tyne and Wear Metro and once again that is the case. The past week has not only seen trains go for scrap but has also seen another of the new Stadler vehicles enter service.

The train which has entered service now is 555 010. This was reported as being in use on Tuesday 27th January 2026, although its not thought that this was actually the first time passengers had enjoyed a ride on board the unit. This happened earlier in January (although exact date doesn’t seem to be recorded at the moment) but it only lasted a brief length of time before it was withdrawn with an unknown fault.

555 010 entering service fills in a nice gap with now all units up until 555 021 having been used. It was delivered to the Metro on 11th April 2025, along with 555 011 which had entered service on 31st July 2025.

Meanwhile, there have been another two scrappings during the week. The latest two Metrocars which have been transported to J Denham Metals at Bishop Auckland have been 4023 and 4056.

4023 was the first of these to head for scrap with it making the all too familiar trip on Wednesday 28th January and then the following day (Thursday 29th) saw 4056 head off for scrap. This now just leaves 26 units to go.
