Stop by Stop Edinburgh Trams: Bankhead to Airport – Edinburgh Airport

And so we come to the end of our journey on Edinburgh Trams as we travel on the most expensive section of tramway in the UK.

There will be announcements on the tram to let you know that unless you have purchased an Airport Zone ticket you need to get off the tram and once we make sure that we have that ticket we are off once again. Its another sharp turn as soon as we depart the stop as we then have a long straight stretch of track on the approach to the Edinburgh Airport stop, with one road crossing (for access to a secure car park) as we are also accompanied by Gogar Burn again. If there are already two trams at the stop you may have a short wait here before getting to the terminus but then you will either use the scissors crossover or just go straight into the stop, depending on which platform you are going to use.

The Edinburgh Airport stop is an island platform with tracks either side and the actual platform has a shelter which runs the length of it. As you get off the tram you are likely to be met with ticket checks to make sure you have the right ticket as you get off the platform. The ticket machines, validators and passenger information are all just off the platform and there is also the Tram Lounge which is the former tram mock-up now used for information.

Photos at the Airport stop are not easy but this view shows 252 arriving on 2nd July 2023 with a terminating service as there is another tram on the opposite platform. The tram reflects in the covered walkway to buses, car rental and car parks.

Also at the Airport is the mock-up or the Tram Lounge as it is now. That is in the foreground of this 28th June 2025 image with the stop seen in the background. A tram is at the platform with a queue of people and their luggage forming trying to work out how to get a ticket for their journey into central Edinburgh. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior)
