Utility trials underway on Coventry Very Light Rail

The demonstration runs on the 220-metre long Very Light Rail track in Coventry may be over but that doesn’t mean that evaluation of the technology has ended. One of the reported advantages of the technology is that it will reduce the need for the costly and time-consuming utility diversions and the next stage of evaluation will see different methods being explored.

The demonstrations for utility companies are taking place on the track on Queen Victoria Road. Described as a key phase in the trial, it will involve the use and evaluation of different methods and their effectiveness to either access existing equipment underneath the innovative and lightweight concrete slabs, or to enable the introduction of new utilities that might be needed in the future.

Four different techniques will be trialled: impact moling, horizontal directional drilling, vacuum excavation, and keyhole coring access.

Cllr Jim O’Boyle, Coventry City Council’s Cabinet member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, said: “The installation and public rides of Coventry Very Light Rail were a huge success. The innovative track was laid in just eight weeks, and we are now working in partnership with utility companies to demonstrate how access to utility assets can be maintained without removing the slab.

“Continuing to monitor the track that remains in place is an essential milestone for the future of CVLR. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate that underground equipment can be accessed quickly, safely, and with minimal disruption to the public.

“CVLR is just one part of our vision to transform transport in Coventry, tackle climate change, improve air quality, and provide a more accessible city for everyone.”

The trials got underway on 21st August and are due to be completed by 7th September.

The project doesn’t end there though, as the planning and design process is underway for the next phase. This will see a 800-metre section from the railway station to the University Technology Park. Construction of this line is due to begin in 2026.
