Nottingham tram derailed after being hit by car

Article updated 03/06/2025 following resumption of services

Nottingham Express Transit services on the Clifton line have been severely disrupted after a collision between a car and a tram at the Queens Walk/Robin Hood Way junction. Citadis 228 was derailed in the collision with the emergency services stating it would take several days to fix the issue.

What is know about the incident is that 228 was hit by a car not long before 0800 on Monday 2nd June 2025 (the ambulance service received the first calls at 0748). One end of the tram came off the rails in the collision but remained upright, although did collide with a lamppost. The overhead equipment was also damaged in the incident.

Two people – believed to be from the car – were taken to hospital although their injuries were described as minor. Three people on board the tram were treated at the scene and the driver of the tram was also taken to hospital.

As a result of the collision no trams are running between Nottingham Station and Ruddington Lane with a shuttle service only running between Ruddington Lane and Clifton South (using those trams stranded the other side of the collision). This service was later shortened to rum Southchurch Drive North to Clifton South only.

The car has since been removed from the scene and engineering staff from NET were at the scene starting the process of rerailing the tram ahead of returning it to depot for assessment. The RAIB were also called to the scene to start the investigation into the cause.

The collision happened part way along Queens Walk where Robin Hood Way crosses by way of a signalled crossing.

In a statement following the incident, Trevor Stocker, Head of Operations at NET, said: “At just before 0800 this morning (2nd June), a serious collision took place between a tram and vehicle driving at the Queens Walk area.

“The emergency services were quick to attend the scene, and the vehicle driver and passenger were swiftly taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries sustained.

“There were also injuries sustained by three passengers onboard the tram, who were treated by paramedics at the scene, and the tram driver has also been taken to hospital to be checked over. We thank the emergency services for their prompt response and ongoing support during this time.

“We are still in the process of assessing the full extent of the damage caused to the tram and track. Due to the severity of the incident, we are currently working closely with The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) on what is now an ongoing investigation.

“As such, there will be long-lasting disruptions to the tram schedule until further notice, with no service running between Ruddington Lane and Nottingham Station. Any passengers wishing to travel between these locations will need to use the NCT navy line to complete their journey.

“We’d like to thank all our customers for their co-operation during this time, and encourage all tram users to check the website, app and NET social media channels before travelling for further updates.”

Update 03/06/2025: Services resumed through the area from around 1930 on Tuesday 3rd June after a temporary solution was introduced. NET will be continuing to work on a permanent solution to fix the damage caused over the next few weeks.
