Tyne and Wear Metro overhead line work: Sunday 18th May 2025

Essential overhead line maintenance work will be taking place on the Tyne and Wear Metro from 2100 on Sunday 18th May 2025 meaning no trams will be able to work south of South Gosforth.

The work is being undertaken in the tunnels under Newcastle City Centre with the section between Monument and Haymarket being attended to. The location of these works means that a wider area than usual will need to have their train services suspended.

Last trains on the complete network will run between 2100 and 2200. Last train times will be:

  • 2053 South Gosforth to South Hylton
  • 2108 South Gosforth to Park Lane
  • 2115 South Gosforth to South Shields
  • 2152 South Hylton to South Gosforth
  • 2156 South Shields to South Gosforth

After this trains will still be able to run:

  • South Gosforth to Airport
  • St James to South Gosforth via North Tyneside coast

Buses will run:

  • South Gosforth to South Shields (no. 900)
  • South Gosforth to South Hylton (no. 901)

Stuart Clarke, Infrastructure Director at Nexus, said: “Customers are advised to plan ahead and be aware of the planned Metro line closures from 9pm on Sunday night, 18 May. Buses will be replacing trains over a wide area of the Metro system, from South Gosforth to South Shields and South Gosforth to South Hylton.

“This is so that we can carry out urgent and essential preventative maintenance work on a section of overhead line equipment in our tunnels beneath Newcastle. The scale of the works that we need to undertake is such that we can’t pack it all into a night shift and will require the early evening closure. We’ve scheduled these works for a Sunday night so that it affects as few customers as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience it causes.

“A frequent replacement bus service will be running from Regent Centre interchange. The buses will operate from there down to South Shields and South Hylton. Please allow extra time if you’re travelling through the affected areas.”
