Wednesbury Great Western Street improvement works completed

Work to improve the public space at the West Midlands Metro Wednesbury Great Western Street has been completed, thanks to funding through the government’s Levelling Up Programme.

The improved area now includes new paving, upgraded lighting, comfortable benches, and a new litter bin. The enhancements aim to create a more attractive, safe, welcoming and accessible environment for both residents and visitors.

Cllr Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “This is an exciting upgrade for Wednesbury that transforms the Great Western Street Metro area into a more inviting public space and gateway to the town. These improvements are part of our commitment to making Sandwell cleaner, greener and safer for everyone.”

The improved lighting is designed to not only illuminate the space beautifully but also to help passengers feel safer when using the trams, especially during the evening. New trees and shrubs have also been planted to enhance the streetscape and contribute to the area’s green infrastructure.
