Picture in Time: Manx Electric Railway 6+51

We go into the archives again for “Picture in Time” as we remain on the Isle of Man for this latest edition.

This image was taken on 29th July 2002 although you would be hard pressed to believe that it was the height of summer with the cloak of Mannan seemingly shrouding the island in mist. We take a look at the combination of Tunnel Car 6 and trailer 51 which appear to be on a private hire and have stopped on the section of line between Derby Castle and Groudle for photos.

6 is another of the Tunnel Cars (built in 1894) whilst 51 is one of the original trailers built for the opening of the line in 1893. Six trailers were built for the MER at that time and this was the third of them (originally numbered 13 but renumbered in 1895 to 25 and then in 1904 to 51). Its historic nature s appreciated and its not an everyday choice for service but is a regular for enthusiast specials, often running with original motors 1 and 2.
