In Pictures: Supertram Birley Lane engineering works

Trackworks got underway on the South Yorkshire Supertram network on Saturday 29th March around Birley Lane on the Blue route out to Halfway. During these works – scheduled to continue until Sunday 13th April – no trams are running from Birley Lane to Halfway with replacement buses in operation instead. Stuart Cooke investigated some of the early works and temporary service arrangements at Birley Lane.

After an initial three day stage of works near to Birley Lane tramstop, from Tuesday 1st April the works moved on to the section of line further towards Halfway. During this visit the actual location of the work was on Sheffield Road inbound between Birley Moor Road and Hackenthorpe stops.

The work compound on Sheffield Road where contractors initial task is to remove the road surface before the rails themselves could be renewed.

The lengthy section that was being tended to can be seen here by the fencing going into the distance. The adjacent road remains open for traffic going the other way.

121 stands at Birley Lane with the line closed further ahead. Trams terminate at the usual Halfway bound platform.

And then straight after departure uses the crossover to gain the correct track for its journey to Malin Bridge. 121 again demonstrates.

With a temporary replacement bus service on the left hand side we look further along to Birley Lane where 105 waits for its next working.
