Supertram introduces official body camera policy for conductors

The wearing of body cameras by all conductors on the South Yorkshire Supertram network is now mandatory following the introduction of a new policy by management. Body worn cameras had been introduced in autumn 2023 as a pilot but following the success of this it has now been decided to make it compulsory.

The new policy was introduced from Sunday 2nd March 2025 and marks a significant step in enhancing safety and security for both staff and passengers. Since the initial trial rollout, staff members have reported feeling safer while wearing them, and the presence of the cameras has proven to be an effective deterrent against anti-social behaviour.

James Stewart, Supertram’s Head of Customer Services and Operations, said: “The safety and wellbeing of our staff and passengers is our top priority. The introduction of body cameras is a vital step in ensuring a safer working environment for our frontline colleagues. These cameras not only help deter anti-social behaviour but also provide crucial evidence when needed. We are proud of the positive impact they have already had and look forward to continuing our commitment to safety and security.”

Supertram continues to take a zero-tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour towards its staff and will be working with South Yorkshire Police to increase successful prosecutions by supporting investigations with body camera footage.

The introduction of mandatory body cameras is a proactive step by Supertram to fostering a respectful and secure environment onboard its services.
