It may come as a surprise but the use of vapes and electronic cigarettes is not currently banned on the Tyne and Wear Metro. But that could be about to change as Nexus are proposing a change to byelaws which would ban the use of both on the network (including trains and stations), in the same way that cigarettes currently are.
In order for Nexus to create a new Metro byelaw, a 28 day consultation period is now underway (as required by the Department for Transport).
If after this consultation, the proposal is approved, it will allow Nexus to prosecute those caught vaping on Metro trains and at Metro stations. Anyone caught will face a fine of up to £1,000.
Anyone who wishes to make comments on the consultation can find out more information at https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro/looking-after-our-customers/conditions-carriage-and-byelaws
