After the return of Metro services – comes the suspension of Metro services!

The Tyne and Wear Metro doesn’t look like it can catch a break at the moment. No sooner had  full service resumed through Gateshead after repairs to the road flyover then the network was hit by not one, but two issues which have impacted services once again.

Thursday 2nd January 2025 was meant to be the first day that a full service on the network would operate (although trains had started running again on New Year’s Eve it was still at a reduced frequency) but that didn’t quite go according to plan thanks to two incidents.

The overhead line in the Haymarket area suffered damage and to compound matters a bridge in the Felling area was struck by a road vehicle. The bridge goes over the Metro tracks and there was a risk that debris from the bridge could fall onto the tracks leading to the decision to suspend services under it. The two problems led to services between South Gosforth and Heworth being suspended.

A revised service operated:

  • South Gosforth to Airport/St James
  • Heworth to South Shields/South Hylton

Services did manage to resume in their entirety on the evening of Friday 3rd January 2025, although they were not running to the normal timetable. The last repairs to be completed were on the overhead line at Haymarket.
