Edinburgh Trams run all the way through for Hogmanay

Edinburgh is usually the centre of Hogmanay celebrations with people coming from all over the world to experience the festivities around Princes Street. The sheer numbers who attend the street party, fireworks and concerts means that it isn’t safe (or even possible) for the trams to continue to run and so plans are put in place for a split service to operate. And that was how it should have been for New Year 2025 – but then the weather had other ideas!

With stormy weather – although seemingly not stormy enough to be given a name! – forecast organisers of the events took the step of cancelling all events ahead of them taking place. Aside from those who had travelled long distances – and its not just from the UK! – having their plans thrown into chaos this did have a positive outcome for Edinburgh Trams.

The cancellation allowed them to continue to run along Princes Street throughout and so there was no need for the split (Airport-West End and Picardy Place-Newhaven) to be put into place. This also meant that the planned free trams overnight could run full route as well.
