Out and About: Edinburgh Trams – June, July and August 2024

We go “Out and About” in Edinburgh again for this latest article.

There are beautiful blue skies overhead as 257 waits outside the Playhouse Theatre. The theatre originally opened as a cinema in 1929 and closed for this use in the 1970s. It then reopened as a theatre in the 1980s having narrowly escaped demolition. The tram has partial advertising for the Royal Highland Show, the show itself was set to close on the day this image was captured. 257 was to remain stationary here for a couple of minutes as the platform at Picardy Place was occupied by the previous service. This image shows 272 at McDonald Road as it works a service from Newhaven to the Airport. The partial advertising is for West Craigs Village which had not long been applied to the tram, it was the second new advertising contract for the tram in 2024 coming after a design for Scottish Water. It remains in place in mid-December 2024.

On the same day we see a tram in an (almost) full advert livery, although it does have the ends devoid of vinyls to show off the white of the fleet livery still. 276 is advertising the Edinburgh Dungeon in a very dark wrap. Its at McDonald Road on the way to Newhaven. This ad replaced another dark ad for Taylor Swift. (Photographs x2 Roy Calderwood, 22nd July 2024)

Applied in July 2024 just ahead of the Paris Olympic Games, 255 got its first ever (and to date only) full wrap advert for RBS’ support of Team GB. The purple vinyls stood out from the rest of the fleet as we see here as the tram approaches McDonald Road tramstop on the way to the Airport. McDonald Road Library is on the left.
