Out and About: Great Orme Tramway – July 2024

A tramway not often featured on these pages is the Great Orme Tramway which runs from the town of Llandudno up to the Great Orme in two sections. In this “Out and About” we try and remedy that a little bit by showing a few images.

4 is one of the two trams which operate on the lower section of the line as we see ascending up towards Halfway in this shot. The narrow roads that the tramway travels along on the lower section are clear to see here.

The other lower section tram is 5 which is seen having just departed from Halfway in this shot as it heads down to Victoria Station.

Onto the upper section and this is 6 which heads away from us. The difference in the terrain the two sections travel through is obvious with the upper section being very much more rural.

The quartet of trams is completed with this shot of 7. The Great Orme Cable Car can be seen on the left. 7 is just pulling away from Halfway Station. (All Photographs by Steven Hughes, 5th August 2024)

  1. Geoff Currie says:

It is a shame the overhead ” telephone” wires are still not in place.

  2. Gordon Casely says:

The Great Orme Tramway is a lovely line, and I’ve travelled on it since 1957.

But what a shame that the overhead has been cut down. The trolleypoles added to much character to the trams.

For new readers, the overhead was not for power, but for communication. Comms are now handled by driver radio.
