Stop by Stop London Trams: Beckenham Junction & Elmers End lines – Arena

We are back to “Stop by Stop” as our journey on London Trams continues.

When we leave Harrington Road stop we have our first potential interaction with road traffic as we pass over what is Harrington Road itself. But as this is just access to the cemetery its not likely to cause many issues to our progress. The tram then enters South Norwood Country Park as it snakes it way through with a few pedestrian crossings to negotiate before we take another sharp turn and arrive at Arena. This is an interchange stop with trams to Elmers End having come in just before we reach the stop. Its got platforms either side of the tracks again. There wasn’t previously a railway station here although it is located on the trackbed of the Woodside and South Croydon railway.

2541 is just pulling away from the Croydon/Wimbledon bound platform at Arena as it works a service to Wimbledon. South Norwood Country Park, Croydon Sports Arena and the home of Croydon FC are all to the left of this shot.

In the second shot is 2556 which is just arriving at the stop heading in the opposite direction. You get trams going to both Beckenham Junction and Elmers End from here and this one is going the short distance to Elmers End. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior, 21st September 2021)
