Man charged with arson over Luas fire

A 61 year old man has been charged with arson over a fire which destroyed a tram in Dublin City Centre during riots in November 2023.

John Tate, from Dublin, appeared at the Dublin District Court on 6th February 2024 charged with six offences relating to the riots. As well as the tram arson he’s also been charged with violent disorder and of obstructing the Luas and bus.

He was granted bail but his defence solicitor confirmed he would be unable to meet the conditions at the present time. He is due to appear at the Criminal Courts of Justice on 13th February 2024.

In the incident, Citadis 5037 was attacked and set on fire. It was eventually returned to depot but the latest articles following Mr Tate’s court appearance is now describing it as “destroyed”.
