Picture in Time: Glasgow 1297 & Sheffield 510

We stay at Crich for this week’s “Picture in Time” but where last time out we were in 1979, this time we go back about another five years.

This photo is believed to have been taken around 1974 and shows two relatively modern double deckers at the museum. In fact if you think about with Sheffield 510 being built in 1950 and Glasgow 1297 in 1948 when this photo was taken these two trams were newer at this time than the Sheffield Supertram Siemens-Duewag trams are to us today!

Both of these trams probably need little introduction, having been popular members of the collection at what we now know as the Crich Tramway Village for many years. Sheffield 510 remains part of the operational fleet in 2023 having first run at the museum in 1969. Glasgow 1297 hasn’t been as prolific in service as that hasn’t run since 2007 after suffering a motor failure; it had first operated in 1970.
