Call to save Laxey Mercury Arc Rectifier Sub Station

A campaign has been launched on the Isle of Man to save the unique Mercury Arc Rectifier Sub Station at Laxey which has been used to power the Manx Electric Railway for many years. It is planned that this will be decommissioned in September 2013 and it has originally been thought that the building would be retained in its original condition but it is now reported that this decision is under review.

The Laxey Sub Station is the last of its kind in the United Kingdom and a group of campaigners have now launched a petition to try and persuade the Department of Community Culture and Leisure to keep to their original decision and to retain the building in its current format, even after it is decommissioned.

The petition can be signed at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-the-laxey-manx-electric-railway-mercury-arc-rectifier-sub-station.html and for more information on the campaign visit https://www.facebook.com/SaveOurSubstation
