Overhead line damage leads to Tyne & Wear Metro disruption

Tyne and Wear Metro services between Haymarket and Airport and Haymarket and Four Lane Ends were suspended from the afternoon of Wednesday 10th August following damage to the overhead line. The damage occurred in the Gosforth area with engineers on the scene to assess and then conduct repairs.

In a statement Nexus said: “We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding, and we want to say sorry for the inconvenience this disruption causes. Our engineers are working as fast as they can to restore the service and customers should check our website and social media before travel, for the latest information. This summer’s extremely hot weather creates new challenges for Metro, as the system’s overhead power lines expand and sag in the heat, and can suffer greater damage as a result. Our teams are constantly checking the overhead line for damage and we are bringing forward emergency repairs where we need to.”

Trains were continuing to run from St James to Four Lane Ends via Whitley Bay and from Haymarket towards South Shields and Sunderland although with delays due to the disruption.

Its hoped that trains will start running as normal from Thursday 11th August.
