In Pictures: Update from Blackpool construction works

With our little hiatus in new updates to British Trams Online its been a while since we last featured images from the construction works on the Blackpool Tramway extension up Talbot Road but it would seem we’re not the only ones to have done not a lot recently! In this article we feature photos from Thursday 26th and Friday 27th August with very little progress seen in these images since our last article.

It has now been approximately two months since the work on installing the overhead up Talbot Road begun in earnest with overnight road closures put in place to allow the work to safely take place. In that time the majority of the work has taken place at the Talbot Square end of the road (closest to the current Prom line) with the wires put in place on both the south and north curves along with associated frogs. Further up the road and span wires have been installed as far as Abingdon Street.

The second major worksite for the extension is up at the former Wilko’s store where work has been taking place on laying the tracks up to the new terminus. With a scissors crossover in place and concrete having been poured to surround some of the track good progress has been made with attention having recently turned to concreting around the crossover and putting track in at the actual terminus.

26th August on the Prom and the new overhead support poles are cordoned off and seem to have been newly painted. This is just opposite the north curve.

Same day but up at Wilko’s and we look up towards the crossover with the wire mesh in place for more concrete to be poured.

A day later and we are looking into Talbot Square from the Prom with the overhead wires strung into place.

And another look at Wilko’s. The framework of the new hotel and restaurant dominates the scene with the tramway terminus located around the white tent. (All Photographs by Tony Armitage)
