Teddy bears on a Tuesday at Heaton Park

The Heaton Park Tramway is taking full advantage of the upcoming school half-term break, with a rare midweek opening on Tuesday 28th May. This day will see the first ever Teddy Bear’s Picnic event held at this tramway. It had previously been stated in some places that the teddy day would be on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May, but we have been advised that this is incorrect and that the event is taking place on Tuesday instead.

Described as ‘a fun-filled family event’, this day will see two special trams operate, with departures from Lakeside scheduled for 12:30pm and 2:00pm. Any child who brings a teddy bear along for the ride will be allowed to travel on these journeys free of charge. This event builds on the success of several Tuesday opening days during summer 2012, Tuesday being the chosen day as a regular work party is held at the park most weeks on this day.

Anyone who visits the tramway will of course also be able to inspect progress on the refurbishment of Leeds 6 which is progressing well. The dash panels have now been stripped down, sanded and filled in as required, and one end has received a coat of primer before the top coats of grey are applied. The bumpers have also been stripped down following the discovery of some rotten timber, which will need to be replaced before the tram can return to service.
