Delays after Metrolink points failure

It’s been a few weeks since we reported on Metrolink delays but the system hit the headlines again this week when a points failure at Timperley caused chaos on Thursday 8th March – a night when Manchester United were playing at home.

The points failure happened at Timperley during the evening rush hour and led to all trams on the Altrincham line being suspended whilst it was fixed. Trams continued to run as normal between Bury and Piccadilly, St Werburgh’s Road and Victoria and Eccles/MediaCityUK to Piccadilly during the disruption.

The evening also saw a tram fail at Shudehill at around 1630 which caused delays to trams heading to Victoria and Bury.

Although this is the first time the local media have reported on Metrolink delays for quite some time judging by the comments section on the Manchester Evening News website
there have been other periods of delays and disruption in recent times which seemingly weren’t considered to be newsworthy.
